    • Geographical position: Algeria is one of the largest and advanced countries of Africa, located at the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. Algeria occupies the central part of the mountain area - Atlas and 1/4 part of Sahara.
    • State system: The head of the state is the President (is elected for 5-year term). The legislature is the two-chamber Parliament: consisting of National Public Assembly (380 seats, are elected by direct universal suffrage for 5-year term) and Council of the Nation (144 seats, one third is appointed by the President, two thirds - are elected by indirect voting for 6-year term).
    • Climate: The climate of Algeria is subtropical Mediterranean. The average temperature of January +5-12?C, July - +25?C, precipitations amount is up to 1200 mm in mountains and 200-400 mm on plains. In Sahara it is much hotter, and precipitations fall out less than 50 mm per year.
    • Miscellaneous: Till 1962 Algeria had been the French colony. The population is Algerians, descendants of ancient Berbers and Arabs, basically professing the Islam. In the North the settled agricultural population (more than 95 % from the general bulk) prevails, in a deserted part the inhabitants (including Berbers) still keep the traditional way of life, being engaged in the nomadic cattle breeding. The capital of the country is the ancient city of Algeria stretched as an amphitheater on hills at the same bay. The majority of buildings are constructed from the light building material thus giving to the city trim appearance. Arabian Kasbah in the old part of city is very peculiar, with the freakish disorder of narrow streets and one-storied houses with flat roofs, harmonious mosques and other buildings in the Eastern style. Among them the mosque-tomb Sidd Abdarrahman constructed in the XVII century and the mosque Jami-al-Jadid are prominent.
