- Geographical position:
It is the Island State in the Indian Ocean, near the southern coast of India from which Mannar Strait and Palk Strait separates the island. The highest point is Pidurutalagala in the centre (2538 m).
- State system:
The form of governing is Republic. The head of the State is the President elected on the period of 6 years. He has the right of Parliament dissolution, he appoints the Prime Minister and Ministers, and he is the Commander-in-chief of armed forces of the country. The head of the Government is the Prime Minister. The higher legislature is one-chamber Parliament (National State Assembly).
- Climate:
The climate is monsoonal; in the south and west it is equatorial, in the east and north - subequatorial. The humidity of air is very high (75 %). There are Monsoons - since May till October (southwest) and since October till April (northern). In the country summer is rainy and winter is dry. The most favorable time for travel is the period since November till March. On the flat part of the island average annual temperature is + 26 + 29?C, in mountain areas + 17 + 24?C. Seasonal fluctuations of temperature are insignificant.
